Georgia Marble
Hi Walter,
I saw the museum 2 weeks ago. Indeed, some parts have been quite affected,
not only by the freeze/thaw cycle but also by acid rains (vertical surfaces
are in better condition than horizontal ones). Chicago is a rough city for
exterior marble and since marble is basically calcium carbonate, it doesn't
whitstand well the acid rains. They are actually doing an extension to the
museum... with Chinese material. Not only many pieces are already cracked as
they are taken out of the crates, but I am convinced that they will have to
replace most of it in less than 10 years.
Of all the marbles, Georgia Marble is still the best to use outside. And of
all the Georgia Marble colors, Cherokee has definitively a better bonding
between the crystals (Field Museum is White Georgia).
Regards,
Hugo Vega
