Writing an artist's statement
Tim,
The purpose of an artist's statement is to show the viewer (and purchaser)
what your intention is in your work and to give them some entry point from
which to understand your work.
Intention could be in one or more of three areas: your approach to
composition (abstraction, realism, etc.), your thoughts about working in
your chosen material, and/or your personal themes in your work and possibly
mentioning artists who have been a particular influence on your own work.
Artist statements can be quite brief (one or two short paragraphs) or you
can take half a page. The important thing is to be personal in your
statement; avoid general statements about art without relating them directly
to your own work.
I think artist statements are important and I know I always appreciate
reading them.
Congratulations on your solictation by a gallery and good luck with your
show.
Oscar
