Writing an artist's statement
If someone asked you to stand up in front of a small group of people and
tell them alittle bit about your work and yourself that is an artist's
statement.Tell them why you work in stone, how your pieces come to be and
what they mean to you.
All an artist's statement is meant to do is to fill in for you when you're
not there. It's something to help make that connection between the
viewer/buyer,the work, and yourself just like you would do in
person.Everything beyond that is just salemanship and it's up to you how far
you want to wade into that, too far and the connection is lost IMO.
I've been told that serious collectors collect artists as much as they
collect pieces and from what I've seen that's true.If you write from the
heart then it's easy to remember and there won't be any gaps or faltering
when those folks come calling to see the man behind the work.
