Subject: Writing an artist's statement

It has long been my belief that folks who become customers not only love
the work but also want to 'own' a piece of the artist themselves. We
are odd birds to most folks. The majority of the people out there have
never learned to use their eyes in connection with their brains and
therefore don't really explore an artwork or quiet themselves enough to
listen to what it might have to say. Basically a statement should give
the viewer a glimpse of the person whose art they are looking at. Once
they find the artist interesting via the statement, they are more likely
to take more care looking at the work itself. So, an effective
statement would communicate something about the person who wrote it in a
form which is easily digested (words). It should encourage a viewer to
creatively use their eyes to enhance their knowledge of the artist
whatever literary device is chosen to introduce the artist. This is
best accomplished by giving only enough actual information about the
work or the approach to working to whet the appetite. It is really only
a sales tool which helps introduce the artist to the patron when the
artist isn't there in person.

Quoted text begins. The biggest failing is to give far to much away so that it actually spoils
the experience for someone viewing the work.
End of quote.
