chlorite
Greetings carvers, Robin, information on chlorite can be found at
http://mineral.galleries.com/minerals/silicate/chlorite/chlorite.htm
I've only carved this one piece but it was great fun. The grain size is
minuscule and there are no visible inclusions in the pieces that I have,
which came from Neolithic stone in BC. Randy would probably send you a
small sample piece for coverage of the costs. The stone is harder than
most alabaster but not as hard as most limestone, marble or wonderstone.
It's easily carvable with both hand or power tools and polishes to a
high gloss with just sandpaper. I used linseed oil to "seal" it, a more
experienced carver suggested a mixture of turpentine and linseed. IIRC
both Stacy Shure and Tracy Powell, who are members of this list, are far
more experienced with chlorite than I am -- are you guys out there???? I
think that it's for indoor sculpture only, but I'm not sure.
