I recently saw a reference to Edward Burtynsky's work on BoinBoing and
thought I'd share it here. He has some truely stunning quarry
photography.
End of quote.
Bob,
Burtynsky's work is truly good. It never ceases to amaze me how the
entire focus of "art" photography has shifted from the search for
beauty in nature, to an unflinching look inward at the human impact
on nature, and yet can be stunningly beautiful, if sad. His
"tailings" series is quite good, yet the underlying knowledge that
this beauty is at the expense of the environment turns the entire
enterprise on its head. Perhaps that is the meaning that photography
has been searching for in the recent past - the beauty of the truly
deadly.
I wonder if he is using film or digital.
Thanks for the link.

PS - Barry Ball is right. Process is simply a means to an end, and
not an end in itself. Once it becomes obsolete, or superceded by
something "better," it is really of no consequence.
