quarry photography by Edward Burtynsky
If you want to see horrifying effects on nature, look at his images of 'ship
breakers' in Bangladesh.
The ships are driven at speed onto the mud flats during high tide. When the
tide goes out, the ship breakers walk out and cut the ships into scrap, using
torches, hammers, and primitive lifting and winching equipment.
Any lubricating oils, greases and fuel residue in the tanks leak out into
the tidal pools, producing a horrible but beautiful sheen on the water, and
saturating the mud.
The men doing this work, even the ones with the cutting torches, are dressed
in sandals and shorts.
All the work I've seen by him was done using film. This includes the
quarries in VT, ship breakers in Bangladesh, strip mines, and piles of used
automobile tires. More recent work might be digital.
You might find additional images of his work at the websites of the
individual galleries that show his work, such as Charles Cowles in New York City.
