profile carving
There was a thread last year about sculptor John Fisher's project. A film
was made about the project in which John Fisher demonstrates the technique
described by Giovanni. I think it is easier to see this demo than try and
understand a written explantion. For those interested you can view the film
online at http://www.deanmars.com/FirstPlaceNationalTVAward.htm. You can
also contact Dean Mars at this site and purchase the film if you wish.
I have tried this method, but looking behind the chisel seems to be looking
at "what has happened" instead of "what is going to happen". I'm just not
comfortable with it. But I'm going to try again and see if I can find the
benefits. As a self taught sculptor who has mostly worked on my own over
the years, I realize I have actually seen very few other sculptors carve.
Reading everything and just figuring it out leaves me sometimes wondering if
there is a better way. Someday I hope to get to Italy, if for no other
reason than to walk around and just observe. In the meantime I hope others
will continue to share their methods. It is a really appreciated.
