profile carving
Oscar, Clive,
It does have to do with where you hold your head, obviously. Often carving profile is not the most comfortable way to carve. I find myself doing all sorts of contortions to position my eye behind the chisel. Still the effort is worth the results of seeing where and how much you are taking off. So few people want to try that it always amazes me.
Clive, when carving in a depression it is still perferable to be behind the chisel, coming at it from all sides. Profiles are not just the obvious one around the outside of the sculpture but also include the sightings down the lentgh of a form.
This discussion need not continue. I have said what I wanted to say. And I hope you give it a try.
Happy carving one and all,
ciao Giovanni
