carving
Maybe I'm a young fogey, but I was surprised when I first viewed the
Fisher video several months ago, about him carving without safety
glasses. I can't imagine ever carving without safety glasses regardless
of how I'm looking at the chisel. Riccochets are a common feature of
any stone removal technique and it's foolhardy to think that you will be
the one who's never hit. It certainly is a disservice to new carvers
for anyone to advocate carving without safety gear. I'm not pointing
any fingers here, so please don't respond by saying "that's not what I
said". As both a scientist who handles hazardous materials and a carver,
please always wear safety glasses and other appropriate safety gear
e.g., mask/respirator, when you carve stone. cheers, g2
