Giovanni and all,
I just watched the Fisher vidio and thought it was exceptionaly well done.
John Fisher's explanation of his process is as clear and concise as any I've
heard. He put into words what I do without really thinking about it. The
logic of stone carving is clear to all who do it. Weather you are selftaught
,went to an institute, or started as a stone mason's helper, the carver has
to do the learning.
Carving is so instinctive to me that I don't think of profiles, but that is
essentially what I do. My vocabulary, (and spelling) is not as clear and
Fisher's, but his description of the process is right on the money, and very
understandable to a person who knows nothing of carving, or is a new
beginner. I especially liked his process of moving from a block to an
abstract form to finding where his vision fits into the abstract. It's a
nice combination of the different schools of thought that make up
traditional, and direct stone carving. Makes for a well rounded sculpture.
Now isn't that a better pun than the last? Maybe not!
Giovanni, I hope the slings and arrows were not too sharp.
Good carving to you.
George
