slip form masonry
cast off your crutches!
do you really think you need all that plywood and bracing and bother?
slip form stonework is a way that people who lack confidence to lay
up stone can feel comfortable doing so. seems you probably have the
skills to lay up the stone without depending on wooden forms.
respecting the vertical plane and covering the joints (the old rule,
one stone over two) just lay your stones, one by one, or a course at
a time, on a mortar bed an inch or two thick. when it sets up (the
next day frinstance) let THAT be the formwork for your concrete and
rubble backing, poured in lifts of a foot, foot and a half at a time.

there is an interesting article on slip-form stonework in the Winter
2003-04 issue of STONEXUS. unfortunately only the first page is
available at www.stonefoundation.org. but if that tastes good, you
can order that back issue.
