slip form masonry
Quoted text begins.Hello slipformers! This fellow is in a techtonic zone, I am wondering about
the details now
End of quote.
tectonic zone? well, that IS a concern. maybe people in tectonic
zones shouldn't build stone houses. the Japanese don't. I'm told
that in California a stone wall can't be more than 4 inches thick -
in an earthquake, thicker stone might overcome the adhesive strength
of the mortar.

End of quote.
cost effective? balderdash. how about the cost of the material in
the forms and the time expended in making them, humping them around,
setting them up, taking them down and setting them up again, cleaning
them, transporting and storing them. plus chiselling off the excess
mortar or concrete. etcetera
with a form which can remain in place for the inside face of the wall
and a string line reference for the outer face. that's cost
effective. (string is much cheaper than plywood) and that makes a
handsomer wall.
(tho maybe as a way of doing veneer without the CMU's slip form might
be cost effective)

End of quote.
my slip-form specialist friend says that slip-forming is a good way
for owner builders or others without stonemasonry skills to build a
stone wall. I think though that if one applied oneself to building
with the aforementioned single fixed form and a string line or
measuring out from that single form to establish the outer plane, one
would soon acquire some stonemasonry skills. the thing about
crutches is that one becomes dependent on them.
