I know someone who has been trying to launch a business for
standardized, modular stone building elements. I think it's a weak
idea. The beauty of stone for construction comes from its variation
and flexibility- each piece can be cut to fit the location and
application. His plan is to use stone to imitate and compete with
cheaper materials, rather than to emphasize the unique qualities and
capabilities of stone. He idea depends on using natural stone in a
way that makes it look like a manufactured synthetic product. You can
either race for the bottom, compete for Walmart prices and volume, or
strive for the top, compete for quality and uniqueness.
