Stone Carving Prices
Pricing is difficult....on that we all agree.
Recently I spent 6 weeks, 7 days a week, 7 hrs a day on one piece. When
finished it was 30 inches by 30 inches by 6 inches. It's Indiana
limestone....I just sold it for $3000. And I'm very happy about it.
While I love the feeling when a piece is sold I actually love the creating
ofthe piece more. I'm not trying to support myself ( thank goodness) so
theselling of a piece always comes as a surprise, is a real ego booster and
inspires me to head back out to the studio. All the things one needs to go
forward.....in my world anyway. And I have to say I carve the things that
appeal to me. This last piece was a creature that was part bird, part
serpent and part fish. I never thought anyone would love it as much as I
do. Happily I was wrong and he will get a new home on Grand Lake !
I don't have any monumental pieces.....right now the largest are the
creatureand an alabaster torso 30 inches high and 19 inches at it's
widest.....the smallest 12 inches by 8 inches by 3 inches.....I find if I
keep my prices around $1500- $3000 I sell. Some took 300 hrs some took 30
hrs.......
I think we will all price our work differently, based on very different
reasons....
