Carving the Short (Straight 1/4" Long) beard of the Male Homo Sap...
I think that men in ancient times used to also treat their beards, braid
them, and put oils and other things in them, just as some of them did to their
hair.
This could produce a curly quality that would look preposterous to us in
sculptures, but may in fact reflect the way that some men looked at that time.
No one did statues of commoners, only of people who were famous in some way.
And the sculptors may have had no idea what the saints really looked like,
but used the bearded men they saw around them as models.
