quartzite
It amazes me the variety of stones in close proximity to eachother in New
England. In one area of NY & VT which I buy stone from you can find
Quartzite on the top of the hill, then go a few hundred yards & find
granite. Slate, Marble, Gneiss all within a 20 mile radius are available.
I'm told gneiss is metamorphed (there's that word again) shale, formed like
the quartzite form heat / pressure.
Which one is better for you to use? Thats a tough to say. In my end of the
stone industry, (building stone), and in my area (Metro DC area), gneiis is
far more popular than quartzite. Of the three main NE products we offer, we
sell about 4 times as much granite as gneiss, seven times as much gneiss as
quartzite, and about 22 times as much granite as quartzite.
Some (most?) gneiss is very difficult to cut across the grain. Quartzite
seems to work easily in any direction.
My personal preference is granite.
