Stone staining - AHA!
So the people who told me about the necessity of 'sealing' the soapstone
were mistaken, the oil is applied for cosmetic purposes. This explains a lot.
This is not the first time that experienced people who knew what they were
doing didn't know the actual reason WHY they were doing it, and passed on
misinformation.
I finally chose to use slate for my stove top and wood for the countertop
and sink area.
