Re; Black limestone
A very polite and good discussion on the morals of stone acquisition. Having a place that has been in the family for four generations, I can assure you that a landowner DOES know and cherish the place they call home, or the ranch or the farm or The Place, and does know when it has been violated. And that is just what it feels like when someone comes on to your place uninvited and helps themselves to that particular piece of stone that catches their eye, a violation of ones special place.
It is no different than if someone had looked in your homes window , seen a particular piece of furniture that they think should be worked on some and is obviously NOT being appreciated by you... and so they liberate it.
And also the generosity of landowners has also been touched on... most I find are excited and feel it is a blessing to be able to help someone take such a thing as a stone and transform it into ... well, Art is an all inclusive term. Please , please, get to know the people who have what you covet... you will both be blessed by the exchange, and a sharing of ideas and friendship will almost certainly lead to even better things. All the landowners I know have a slide show of geologic features in their heads, not just of their places but of almost all the places they have ever been... and they know who owns those things , and will almost certainly be happy to help you along and steer you to things you would never, ever see without that relationship.
If you are ever in West Texas , look me up..... I have a lifetime of rocks in my head.
