Where to find rocks
I am always amazed at how little people know about their surroundings and
the area they live in.This post reminds me of similar posts on another forum
I belong to where folks ask "Where can I find wood?".
Even in the heart of Boston one can find stone worth carving just by
asking. The "Big Dig" uncovers them everyday.Just talk to one of the people
on the site(I recommend a worker not a supervisor. The supervisor will have
to check with the lawyer and get back to you.).
Geological survey maps are available for anywhere in the US (I'm sure other
contries have an equivalent) and can be had thru the state and sometimes
local government.DeLorme also puts out some excellent maps that show where
quarries are located.I have yet to be denied access to the tailings pile of
any quarry I've visited.
Local gem and mineral clubs can be an excellent source of leads for quarries
both active and abandoned in your area. These folks usually know what type of
stone is available and where.
The local water department and road crews are also uncovering rocks on a
daily basis as are local contractors. Most of these folks will deliver large
pieces of choice stone for very little money once you point out what you
want.
The key thing is that you 1-need to get out,and 2-need to talk to
people.Look at it this way, you're going to have to talk to somebody sooner
of later even if you are just ordering the stone you need. What's talking to
afew more folks along the way going to hurt?
Glad I could clear that up for you. Now,anybody know where I can find some
wood?
