How can I mask white spots in pink marble?
Dear Michiel,
I took a look at your web site to see if I could get some clues about how I
would advise you re: the white spots.
I use coloured marble quite a lot, do leave rough areas and worry about
bruise marks some times. Less these days because I've found that they can
seem to be integral to some surfaces. If they turn up in the middle of a
smooth area and I can't argue any right for them to stay I grind, sand and
polish them out.
In other circumstances I "hide" them by making them look as if they belong
there by doing a whole range of things depending on the aesthetics of the
whole piece. I notice that you use tool marks as a design component
sometimes and maybe one these patterns over the whole surface could work
here.
I would not be happy about the epoxy idea in your work as I think it could
suck some of the integrity out of your kind of work. Acid OK but some
bruises are much too deep for that and if you are not careful you can make
more nasty white marks from salt build up, sand blasting can work as long as
you are happy with how it looks, the trick with rough areas is always to
make them look as if you haven't really touched them. Another surface on
rough areas that I use quite a bit is made with stainless steel rotary wire
brushes (don't use them on high speed as the will leave burn marks, very
slow is best)
My rule is if it looks like you meant it to look that way it is OK, if it
doesn't look as if you chose it to be like that then you've got problems.
Good luck Clive
