Travertine
Hi William;
Quoted text begins.RE: "great selling points . . . " or " . . . draw backs: i,e,
weathering or maintenance issues"
End of quote.
Other than the points I've made I don't know of much else to say --
except that I have met a few people who most definitely do not like
travertine.
I've never pressed them as to why -- some were students, some were
potential clients -- and when it came up I just moved on to other types
of stone. Maybe the holes remind them of something unpleasant?
As far as weathering, I live in Georgia -- Southeastern US. I have a
pair of good size chunks of travertine (6 ft. x 6 inches x 18 inches)
that have been in my scrap pile outdoors for 20-odd years. I think it is
Roman cream (I got it from the site of an old marble cutting yard that
closed during the depression), as it looks virtually the same as the
Roman cream I've carved in Italy. This salvaged travertine was outdoors
in the woods for forty or fifty years before I hauled them home.
The interior of the natural pores are all black inside because of
detritus and algae, so they are more visually prominent than freshly
quarried travertine. The parts of the blocks that are always in the
shade have green algae growing on the surface, but the part that is in
direct sun part of the day looks like slightly dirty travertine compared
to when I make fresh cuts in it. As I remember when I first salvaged the
travertine in the early 1980s the surfaces were sort of a dingy gray, and
I cleaned the surface using muriatic acid straight out of the plastic
jug and acid brushes like you would use to clean a concrete sidewalk.
Good Luck with your Sale!
Don
