Polishing Granite or Basalt
While I haven't used that particular type of stone I think yes you could
be going too fast or whatever but more likely sometime during the actual
carving process you may have caused some internal fracturing which
clouds the surface. Try varying your polishing technique as well as
watching carefully the angles you carve in relation to the body of the
stone.
