Introducing myself
Hello,
Nice to have found a comprehensive and interesting site
dedicated to the world of stone/work. I am originally from Scotland but
now resident in Finland. I am a self employed dry stone waller working
mostly in the garden landscaping area. Owing to the weather conditions
here I can only work, physically, from around mid April to early
November or from frost to thaw. It's a long lay off period for sure but
it allows me to dabble in other areas, mainly reading and resting!
I first picked up stones in the early seventies repairing dry stone
dykes in Scotland and have periodically left and returned to the stones
over the ensuing years. For the last five years i have worked
constantly during the stone season here and have decided to dedicate
the rest of my working life to perfecting my chosen craft. I just love
working with stone and enjoy the physical and mental benefits it gives
me. There isn't a great demand here for ornamental stone work, as in
Finland customers basically just want paths, steps, patios and walls. I
have the urge to burst out of this confinement and build a couple of
stone spheres, cairns etc. Hopefully if I make some contact with other
dry stone workers out there and get some encouragement. Anybody wanting
to know about the present and past situation viz-a-viz dry stone work
here in Finland and Estonia (a hidden gem for dry stone walls) can get
in touch with me.
All the best Charlie
