Hi Wendy,
Thanks for the article on polishing. I'm an absolute beginner when it
comes to working stone, but I thought I'd fire a brief answer
regarding cup wheels -just so you don't feel people are rude
A cup wheel is a machined metal wheel (say 4 inches in diameter) with
hole in the center so you can attache it to the shaft of a hand held
electric grinder. On the side facing the stone the wheel has a
depression (hence cup). The "edge" of the cup is studded with
commercial diamonds, so you can grind stone. Comes in different
grits. You can find pictures of them on the web. You can get a much
better description on their use from the more experienced folks on
the list.
