availability of stone
David,
I was at the Virginia Mist quarry in Rapidan, VA. This quarry has
been mentioned on the List in the past. Actually its not granite but
diorite that they produce (the difference, I think, is that this
material doesn't have quartz crystals like granite does). Its a
beautiful stone with soft mist-like drifts of white on a dark
background. There was a large polished slab with some letters cut
into it that was leaning against a dead tree near the entrance. A 50-
ton block from that quarry, polished on one face, has been used as a
911 memorial. They cut dimensional stone, both for domestic use and
export. There are lots of big beautiful blocks sitting around that I
would just love to have. The quarry is owned by R.E.D. Graniti in
Italy. I also talked by phone recently to the original owner of the
quarry. He seemed a very interesting old man who apparently has had
several lives.
