Building on clay
for a wall foundation I would generally say go well below frost line
wherever it is you are. otherwise a lens of ice will build up on the
clay and heave the wall. but for a retaining wall only one meter
high? heck, you don't even need a foundation. just take the turf
off. use hefty base rocks. and capstones. build it well and it will
shift for itself.
