What they have is an academic method of judging various elements of a
piece - this does not constitute 'knowing' as far as I am concerned, it
does however, give a uniform basis for accepting or rejecting a given
body of work. There are reasons why folks like Van Gogh never sold
despite having an art dealer in the family - his work did not come
within the accepted norms for academically good art at that time. As
touched upon earlier Dada set the trend for this days aesthetics as well
as helping move the entire art community away from work which will
endure. I found a most amazing site just yesterday. It belongs to Ilana
Yahav, who makes sand art movies - an incredible combination of
sandpainting dance video and music well worth the d/l time
