Top Ten
Dear Philip,
Yes I know it looks that way, thank goodness you said "Progressed" !!
Someone wrote an article once about it and called it "Going Backwards to go
Forwards" another called their's "From Mesopotamia to Minimalism".
For me the key is trying to find a way where the sculpture is not just a
clear cut idea faithfully realised or me interacting furiously with any
stone that I may stumble across. What really interests me about Matisse,
Rosso and Giacometti is that they seemed to get that balance right.
What really bores me these days is the-have-an-idea-and-make-it-brigade,
well worse than that they leave out any chance of an interaction with the
object as it unfolds because more often than not they get some one else to
make it for them. What I feel they are really missing out on is all the
possibilities that come when you have a dialogue with what you are doing.
