Subject: stone dust

The oil system (the little glass cup) on your compressor keeps dirt out
of the compressed air, saving your expensive tools, it does nothing for
the motor.

My solution if to put the compressor in another room or better yet,
outside, away from the dust. Running the air hose back into my carving
room was easy enough and didn't cause any major heat loss.

My 'carving shack' is one room and wood heated as well. If you think
harder stone causes dust, try soapstone! The talc it contains actually
'floats' in the air, so it gets everywhere. Three weeks ago I fried an
old vacuum being used for pulling the dust out of my band saw to the
outside. Although I do have another old vacuum I also have a large axial
fan I'm going to hook up to a vent system and that will keep dust out of
the motor at least, pulling it outdoors. A 'carving box' can be made
with some simple plans, and good fan and some hose to the outside.

Filters on regular vacuums help, but not for long. The fine dust
actually gets through the bag and down into the motor. You would need a
filter capable of catching particles close to one micron in size to trap
talc dust.
The best is to get the dust outside somehow, away from your running
motors and especially your lungs. Invest in the best dust mask you can
afford first and then look into a dust extraction system!
