An air compressor will suck the dust from the floor, it doesn't have to be suspended in the air. Without thoroughly isolating the compressor space, i.e., build a separate room within the garage, the dust will get to it.
Another option is to put the compressor outside the garage...under a low roofed shed might be sufficient or enclosed as much as you like...and run the airline through the wall. This has the advantage of being far less noisy as well as out of the dust.
Very important: drain the condensation from the tank, daily if possible. The tank doesn't hold air very well when it rusts through and you can't see it happening.
