Subject: About Pollock... addendum

The belief that Pollock traded paintings for essentials such as food and
booze appears to be an urban legend. Pollock had a gallery, wealthy collectors,
and a very savvy wife by the time he started doing his famous work. Some
people think that his wife was the more serious artist, and Pollock got his fame
by stumbling across a gimmick.

Jules Olitski, working in upstate New York, used to trade paintings for
quantities of paint brushes and other useful items from a local hardware store. I
verified this with one of his grandchildren at a show of HER work (Olitski
himself showed up at the opening, along with his grown children, assorted
nieces and nephews... the whole clan. VERY friendly people, too!!). It has not
been suggested that Olitski got less than fair value for the work.
