porphyry
Thanks Walter. I have seen the term terrazzo used two
ways, either referring to a flagstone paver or to the
mosaic you are referring to. It is odd how much mosaic
terrazzo looks like porphyry, but then again not so odd.
Porphyry is mosaic made by nature. Nature makes a pretty
good terrazzo!
Apparently porphyry can occur in sheets that make good
flagstones and therefore good terrazzo, or terracing
pavers. It also seems to have been a top choice for
paving cobbles throughout Europe over the ages due to it's
durability.
What we call porphyry in Missouri certainly doesn't occur
in thin sheets.
