porphyry
hmm,
reminds me that I've heard the name porphyry applied -erroneously- to
what was actually something called pudding stone -resembles the
terrazzo you describe. pudding stone is a conglomerate composed of
inclusions, pebbles and broken fragments of various stone types,
cemented in a silicious matrix. it's sedimentary or metamorphic, not
igneous as porphyry is. can be handsome though. takes a polish. I
remember columns of pudding stone somewhere. tasty.
