porphyry
I've stayed out of the discussion of porphyry since I don't carve stone, and
it doesn't occur in the erratic stones I gather for my work, but...
I did see some sculpture carved from it on a trip to Europe some years ago,
and I had trouble deciding if it was carved stone or cast metal of some kind,
the surface was so smooth and glassy looking. Beautiful raspberry / plum
color too.
The photos I've seen online since this thread started revealed to me exactly
what that stuff was that I saw all those years ago.
