Thanks for the link , Kent. I have spent a bit of time in and around the
Ellis County court house while the restoration was going on--clear up into
the clock tower and out on that cat walk. I have to agree with the writer
of the article, in that there is far too much ornamentation on those
(massive) capitals for it to be the work of one man, especially given the
time frame of the construction. Columns and capitals of the same
dimensions out of the same red sandstone are common on several other Rilley
designed courthouses, and it has always been my opinion that they were a
stock item from one of the many fabrication mills at the time, and the
final ornamentation was added per job specks- probably determined by the
county budget.
