Art and numbers
Kent said,
Quoted text begins.I do not consider myself an artist , as I perhaps lack the vision spoken
of ... but I do see things that are hidden in the stone. Getting there
without numbers eludes me though.... there has been a whole discussion of
Them That Plan verses Them That Just Do, also sharing the load of working.
Without numbers, the universal language , then I do not comprehend how this
could happen. Time is a number, and all the visions in the world must have
a number attached to them sooner or later before they can be manifested.
End of quote.
Kent you bring up issues and ideas that can never be resolved. Each of us
has to find our own way to let the art out.
I am solidly in the just do it group. I use hand tools (mostly), but not
exclusivly , to express myself.
You, being a numbers guy, use different tools. The square, tape measure,
computers, cns's, ect ect.
The human experience called art is a broad, all encompassing , huge concept.
Within that great book, are the traditional tools, hammer and chisels.
Square, level, and chalk line. Lets not forget the tools of writing, music
and dance. Finally, we have the people on the cutting edge of technology and
art who are experimenting. I don't have to comprehend how they do it, but I
do need to look at the end result with appreciation.
Even when I'm "just doing it", there comes a time when I have to weigh,
measure and calculate how a piece stands, how thin or thick an area needs to
be.
In the architect's world of numbers, there comes a time when he or she has a
bunch of stone's that need ornamentation. Look who ends up doing the final
touch that people are talking about decades later, the just do it guy's!
Guess we will just have to work together.
Keep your pencil sharp,
George Graham
