I am an artist . I have my employees do the dirty work
Now that I've got your attention...
Suppose Picasso had suffered a stroke, spinal cord injury, or some other
misfortune that left him without control of his arms and legs. Yet he continued
to create work by giving specific detailed instructions to able bodied
apprentices.
Would you insist the work is not by Picasso? Perhaps.
Would you say he's not an artist? Never.
Would you say the work isn't art? Of course not. It's just collaborative
art, not the same kind of art as that work he created by himself with his own
hands.
So for me, going to all these art galleries and museums in NYC, the question
isn't is it art - but what kind of art.
It is perfectly alright to hold the opinion that art conceived of and
created by one artist using hand tools is better than work which used power tools,
which in turn is more authentic than work which was done in part by a
technician or craftsperson, which in turn is truer than work done entirely by a
craftsperson or employee....
But that's just one point of view, among many.
