looking for a bright green stone
I've seen large works carved from jade-green stone which was identified by
the Art Gallery as serpentine. I'm not sure if that was accurate. It may have
been Serpentinite, or another rock containing the mineral Serpentine.
This was in a traveling show of sculpture from Zimbabwe in SOHO a few years
ago. The stone was very hard, and took a high polish. It looked like glazed
ceramic.
Green blocks of Serpentinite erode from the exposed bedrock in Staten Island
and fall to the side of the road, as a result of freezing and thawing. They
can be gathered there.
Some green rocks containing Serpentine also contain asbestos, and mining for
those minerals is associated with negative effects on the health of the
workers, and persistent environmental damage caused by runoff. Sculptors should
be careful with it.
I have no idea if this info is useful at all, but it struck me as an
interesting coincidence that I'd seen beautiful sculpture of green stone only a few
blocks from where I first saw Robin's work, in SOHO, NYC.
