I think John nailed it - too many questions.
All the questions are good (of course) but what's missing are parameters.
Why don't you start by telling us your own experience with the "zone?"
And I think it is important not to think too much about all of this. (the zone is not an intellectual space)
One experience I've noticed recently: it is very useful to push myself, to do something out of the ordinary (eg. using calligraphy ink to paint with a brush), use a new material, even just pushing through my thinking/dreaming/wishing process to actually doing something what ever it is......
and sometime later, within the activity, I notice the enraptured space I'm in....
Hope this makes some sense with your questions....
