ok. time for me to weigh in.

There are different parts of the brain where actions can originate. People
who are doing something which requires eye-hand or eye-body coordination, such
as sculpting, painting, or downhill skiing, are using a different part of the
brain from the part we talk and reason with.

There is a direct line of stimulus, reaction, which the intellectual part of
the brain does not participate in, but which it can watch as if from outside.
Automatic driving is the same. You can realize that you've driven home
without actually 'seeing' anything; or remembering the ride. Your eyes linked to
your hands and feet, and the action was controlled by another part of the
brain. It's a reflex.

Sadly, this is also the mechanism of compulsive behaviors such as gambling
and shoplifting. The conscious mind becomes a witness to the self destructive
behavior originating in a different part of the brain, and is often powerless
to stop it.
