Subject: Respirators and dangerous rocks.......

As a limestone carver, I don't often use a respirator, but I do keep a
couple of the two cartridge type respiraters around for those times when
one is needed. Those that I have are the top end carried by HD, but there
probably are much better available. None are very effective over a full
beard, but any help at all is appreciated when the stone on the banker is
sandstone, or any other silicate.

Some soapstone does have asbestos, some doesn't. Same with serpentine, and
chlorite too. Most suppliers of carving stone should have some test
results, but even if a sample does test free, it doesn't mean that 10 feet
away in the same quarry there isn't any. But as mentioned earlier, these
are silicate mineral stones, and a good respirator, and dust control are
important even if the asbestos is not present.
