Norm , I use a &" cup as a first choice.
It is very good for flattening, just remember to let the weight of the grinder/wheel do the labor for you. I use it on the biggest Milwaukee grinder... and yeah , Popeye is what you feel like before you are done. Moves an amazing amount of material in a short time . I run a masons supply store in addition to the redimix concrete operation , so I order and test out all sorts of tools that I think would make the job easier/ better / faster. Mostly I find out that the old ways have a lot to be said for them.
You know I have a welders background, apprentices I have found will work themselves into a stupor with a 4.5" grinder, cause it is lighter... but you work 6 times as hard, and it burns up shortly. I would show them how to use the big grinders, show them how much faster and better it would work... next day they would have the little one in their hand again , pistoning away like they could rub the material off ,' stead of letting the weight of the grinder/wheel do the work for them. That is when I would unplug the 4.5" , and when I had their full attention, snip off the plug end of the cord with a pair of dykes.... Ah well , I am much more mellow now.
Does the new grinder still have that Just Off The Showroom Floor Smell ? What fun to have a new toy to experiment with !
