I would like to ask opinion on a subject here that might have my ears smarting from being boxed right smartly, but I have to ask.
If you have a particular carving that is very popular... what are the ethics of reproducing this carving?
In addition to redimix concrete and masons supply , for 5 years I ran a precast concrete shop alongside the operation. The downfall of this operation was not enough volume with too much labor. I am finding the same problem prevails if I were to try to grow any sort of living from my carvings.
Being in the precast business, learned a good bit about mold making, and the rubbers available are nothing short of amazing at picking up fine detail. And with some experimentation, Portland Stone and Lueders Limestone are not that tough to replicate with batch designs.
I see reproductions , of bronze sculpture,. of wood carvings... and these bring pleasure to so many who would never ever be able to afford the originals... can this be wrong?
I live in an economically challenged area, West Texas.. yes , the oil patch is booming right now , but been there , done that three times in my lifetime so far. Boom today , deep bust tomorrow. I have not done as some of you have and stepped off on the path less traveled, and not yet prepared to do so.
So.... would you take a heretic to the stake for blaspheming the sacred art objects?
or is there a right and proper way to do such a thing?
I stand all atremble , waiting for judgment on this...
Thank you all,
Kent Lee Ivey
