Verging on Heresy
Hi Kent,
I consider making a mold of a piece I have done just an
opportunity to create further modifications and further pieces.
In other words, a way to get around the conundrum of either
having one's cake or eating it. I can do both through the use
of molds! Variety -- in the form of variations on a theme -- is
certainly one of the tastier spices of my artistic life.
That said, I have only done two pieces that could be
considered 'editions' -- where in the pieces cast are
finished all the same way (all of 3 pieces per edition).
But that minimal number probably has more to do with
my inability to stay focused on the boring process of
making multiples rather than any highfalutin' concern
for the ethics of making multiple copies of my work.
But ethics allow you to do whatever you want with your
designs. If you don't worry about your clients/patrons/
collectors looking at their previously purchased investments
with concern about their possible drop in values, then cast
away for the benefit of the larger but less well-heeled public.
Of course, if you only make molds of new carvings and leave
any older designs out of the equation, then your previous
clients have nothing to worry about as far as the value of
their current investments in your work.
That's my two cents, anyway.
Good Carving to You,
Don
