My suggestions regarding purchase of tools would be to go to the local
supplier and have them set you up with a complete outfit that uses rented
tanks that they refill/replace as they are used.Whatever brand name they
carry will be fine as long as it uses a handle/miver assembly that take a
number of attachments and is not a dedicated single use torch. Some of the
names to look for are Victor(my preference),Oxy-weld,etc.I like to install
flashback arrestor valves at both the torch and the regulators if the
regulators don't have them internally.

For thermal surfacing you'll use mostly a large torch head called a
"rosebud" that uses alot of gas and provides ALOT of heat over a rather
large area.Metal fabricators use these to heat large cross section pieces in
order to bend them.Because they use alot of gas you'll want to contract for
as large a set of cylinders as you can safely store to avoid running out
half way thru a job. This is not a place for scuba size tanks.
If you have never used this type of rig before it would be best to visit the
local fab shop or blacksmith to have them demonstrate it first as it can be
rather scary for a first timer. If you don't have the mix right it can flash
back and burn within the torch head ruining the torch and your day.
Also buy a full set of leathers(to include gloves) and a welder's shield and
appropriate filter plate for safety. The rock is going to spall off and those
pieces will be HOT.
The learning curve for this is best learned one on one in an experienced
craftsman's shop but if there's any other questions you have I'll be glad to
answer them as best I can.
