Dynabrade air requirements

Quoted text begins. You have me wondering now.
I look on Alpha Tools spec sheet for their air powered polisher, which
is about 1/3 the size of the Dynabrade, and they say it uses 16 CFM.
End of quote.
To answer this question, I contacted Dynabrade, and spoke with Tony, a tech
rep. He said, in essence, that the confusion comes from the use of two
different terms: CFM, and SCFM. I apologize for any errors the below
discussion may include because of my inexperience, but here is what I
understood Tony to say:
CFM (cubic feet per minute) is not the same a SCFM (standard cubic feet per
minute). SCFM is used as a standard, he said, because conditions may be
different in Denver than in Los Angeles, for example. SCFM is always a
higher number, he said, and is a rule of thumb, to get SCFM, you would
multiply CFM by ten. So 10 CFM would be equivalent to about 70 SCFM. This
tool uses 73 SCFM.
Regarding the size of the compressor needed to service a tool of that size,
he said there is a standard approximate measure: 1 HP normally generates
3.8 SCFM. So one would need like a 20 HP compressor to run this tool if this
is the only one you are running. Tony added that if you take the total SCFM
of the tools you are using, then (if under 100) divide by 4 to get the
horsepower needed for your compressor. If over 100, divide by 5.
For running this tool, which uses 73 SCFM and a few other tools which total
let us say 90 SCFM, divide by 4 to get the size of compressor horsepower you
need: in that example, 22.5 hp.
Or put another way, this tool has way way higher air requirements than the
7.5 hp compressor that is now only a gleam in my eye.
Hope this helps.
