Tortured Sculpture
Years ago I was visiting Acoma Pueblo, Sky City they call it. It is the Pueblo Indians equivalent of Masada for the Jews, built on a spire of rock high above the valley . The only way up was by hand holes cut into the cliffs. When the Pueblos rebelled against the Spanish , they retreated to this strong hold, and resisted... but alas, were done in by treachery.. a traitor showed the Spaniards the secret path , and they were defeated , captured , tortured , and half of one foot was cut off, the usual way that the Spaniards slowed down slaves that ran.
The Pueblo fella that was telling me this story of the history of the place had more to tell though..
In downtown Albuquerque, there is a heroic bronze equestrian statue of the Duke of ABQ. It was revealed with great fanfare and hoopla.. and next morning, he was missing half of one foot, sawn off. Everytime they repair the statue, his foot is sawn off again. My friend said no one knows who is doing it.... as he fingered a large bronze medallion around his neck......
