Lying Stones
I'm sure Picasso knew if his painty stuff was a lie or not, if he said
it was. Everyone thought he was joking at first, anyway.
However, there are no pretentious artsy-school words that can be
literately applied to stone. Stone is real. Words are superfluous.
Whether you like a stone is as meaningless as whether you can put it in
your pocket.
Calling artists, or anyone, for that matter, a "liar" is impolite, and
in terms of art it is stupid.
One reason stone carving appeals to me is that it is the essence of
truth. It exists. It is real. It is relatively durable. If you do not
like a stone, you can lay it down with the calm assurance that someone,
perhaps millennia later, will like it.
Maybe all this artypoop lingo could drivel over paintings and not stone,
for best effect.
