Subject: Lying Stones

hi all,

Don't you love it when John Graham goes off, there just has to be one
ignorant redneck in every group doesn't there?

On truth or lies: "Art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realise
truth." Picasso. quotes Don Dougan.

Of course if JG had read what was actually said he would have seen that
nobody said that stone was a lie, now that would be stupid wouldn't it? only
what we do with it can often be a lie.

Impolite or otherwise it serves us well to discuss things and clearly it
helps to call a spade a spade as it often brings us quickly to the truth.

For me the act of stone carving involves a great deal of arguing with myself
and asking questions like, "if I do this will I deny the character of the
stone? or " As I have some kind of belief in the idea of truth to materials
am I going to allow myself to leave evidence of my angle grinder?" "Am I
perpetrating a lie if I smooth it over? or the worst one of all "Am I trying
to make this stone look like something it isn't? in other words, create a
tangible lie.

Must go Regards to all Clive
